At Whakatane Haidong Gumdo we believe that anyone can achieve a Black Belt. All you need is a healthy dose of dedication, work ethic and the ability to enjoy the process.
Today was a massive day for the club! Four people from varying ages and backgrounds all achieved one of the biggest goals of Haidong Gumdo, Black Belt. So there you have the facts. You don’t need to be ‘special’ to get a Black Belt in a Korean martial art.
As you read through this edition of the Whakatane Haidong Gumdo Weekly, consider what’s your next big goal?
Enjoy & Haidong!

Preview: The Week Ahead
They shall not grow old, as we that are left grow old.
Age shall not weary them nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun, and in the morning,
We will remember them.
This Tuesday Training falls on ANZAC Day so it seemed fitting to acknowledge it. In past years our first grading of the year was held in the ANZAC Day week. But last year Haidong Gumdo New Zealand made the decision to drop the numbers of gradings in a year from three to two. This means that we will now only have grading mid-year and at the end of the year.
Tuesday Training will proceed as usual.
The club will then finish April with its last training of the month, on Sunday. Yes! You heard that correctly. only seven more days left in the fourth month of 2023. Where has the time gone?!

Tuesday Training
Tuesday night training was a small class with just six members. Shayne Robinson took the only Cho Dan Bo, Finn Fairlie, through all the necessary grading patterns while James Clarke took Ned Fairlie and Dakoda Waikato over long patterns one to three.
Sunday Training (Grading)
When you start off a grading with 100 sit-ups, 50 push-ups and 25 burpees you know its serious business. That’s exactly what Alex Harland, Angus Macrae, Urs Junker, Finn Fairlie and Logan Forsythe (from Budo South Martial Arts Tauranga) ran into this morning. It was a gruelling two hours but the five Cho Dan Bo’s (Red/Black Belts) ultimately survived grading to Black Belt. Congratulations!
